This year, San Diego Trail Tramps celebrates it's 20th Anniversary!

.....San Diego Trail Tramps is a gay/bi/gay friendly men's hiking group dedicated to monthly hikes in San Diego County and beyond. The group's name comes from a New Zealand slang term, "tramp" or "tramping", which roughly means "to hike". Trail Tramps was founded in the Fall of 1998 as an alternative to cruzing the bar scene in search of guys who enjoy the great outdoors. Our group has hosted over 1,500 men on hikes in the past 20 years, with an average attendance of 10-25 hikers on each hike. Our members' ages range from the 20's-70's, with many in their 30's-50's.

.....With such a wide variety of beautiful terrain to cover, San Diego County is now a hiker's paradise. From coastline beaches to inland valleys, from the mountains to the deserts that lie beyond, there are hiking adventures waiting for everyone.

.....For those interested in learning more about what San Diego County has to offer for hiking, we highly recommend the top-selling book "Afoot and Afield in San Diego County" by Jerry Schad. It's about $22.95 and can be found in many bookstores as well as sporting goods stores. It can also be ordered online for only about $17 (+ S&H) at It's loaded with great photos, maps, hike descriptions, and lots more info. and it's what most of our hikes are based on. His book tells you what kind of terrain to expect, degrees of difficulty, elevation gain/loss, distance, etc. for each hike.

.....Our group usually meets the 3rd Sunday of each month to carpool to the hiking area for a full day's outing. The carpool site is centrally located in the Hillcrest area of San Diego, with plenty of free parking.  We recommend wearing hiking boots and clothing appropriate for the weather. Day packs are required for carrying your own water, sports drinks, snacks, sunscreen, etc. (Ideally, every hiker should be prepared with the Ten Essentials when venturing out into the wilderness.)
