Description:  La Jolla Shores to Torrey Pines Beach Hike: C00L & refreshing, Fun and easy!!!

Recommended hike description reading in Schad's book, plus these stats: Area B-2:Torrey Pines/LaJolla, Trip 1: La Jolla Shores to Torrey Pines Beach, (c '99, pp. 30-32, map on p. 31) for hike details. ** degree of difficulty out of a possible *****. Distance: 5 miles. Estimated hike time: 2.5 hrs. Elevation gain/loss is about 3', depending on how far out in the water you go for a swim. ;-)

This hike is located on the coast, about 8-10 miles north of San Diego. (Check the Maps page of this website for more directions and maps to print out.) After our 9:00 am carpool gathering in Hillcrest (departing by 9:15 am), we'll plan to meet at La Jolla Shores beach (north end, on the grass) at 9:45 am, then organize a car shuttle for about an hour up to Torrey Pines State Beach (so we don't have to hike 5 miles back). Hopefully, we'll start hiking north along the coast about 10:45-11:00.

Weather is forcast to be partly cloudy with some morning fog. Temps are expected to be 70-80. High tide is at 8:51 am and will be going out the entire hike. Wear good grip sports shoes in case we need to do some rock scrambling on slippery boulders, etc., or be prepared to do some wading in the surf. Hey. It's So. Cal.!

Originally, we had planned a hike out by the Calcite Mine area in the NE part of the Anza Borrego Desert State Park. However, unseasonably warm weather has kept the temps out there between 95-102 degrees. Fun, searing heat to broil in, perhaps if you're a camel. Hence, coastal hiking time.

This hike takes us north under Scripps Pier and on past the rocky tidepool area. We'll also be hiking along Black's Beach, our favorite nude beach in San Diego County. We'll stop there at the north end for lunch and a swim. Then we'll continue north to Torrey Pines State Beach. After the hike, we'll car shuttle back to La Jolla Shores for those who left cars there.
