Location:    Latitude 323921N, Longitude 1160805W, near the Desert View Tower in Jacumba, off I-8 East, in the SE corner of San Diego County, just before descending to Ocotillo in the Anza Borrego Desert.

 Description:
For those carpooling from San Diego, we'll meet at the Desert View Tower, (just off the I-8 freeway in Jacumba) around 10:30 a.m. to check it out before hiking. To get there from San Diego, take I-8 East (about 90 minutes from San Diego) to the In-Ko-Pah Park Road offramp. Turn left under the freeway, and right on the old highway, which ends at the tower. (Use our map for Smuggler's Cave/Valley of the Moon to get to the general location where the Desert View Tower is.) The owner (and one of our members), Ben Schultz, has invited all hikers to stop by the Desert View Tower anytime you're in the area. From the top of the tower there's a stunning panoramic view of the desert which stretches below to the east and north. Be sure to offer Ben your gratitude and support with a purchase of a snack, memento, etc. from the Tower. After our visit to the Tower, we'll caravan to the trailhead for Table Mountain and start the hike.

Desert View Tower

Chris Wray has come up with a great hike this month! We will hike to the top of 4089' Table Mountain near Jacumba. This volcanic mesa offers a sweeping view of the rugged terrain of the high desert mountains. We will meet at the Desert View Tower to caravan to the nearby trailhead. The hike will climb about 800 feet up the mountain, passing the local landmark called Squaw Tit, where hikers can stop for a photo on the tip, as it were. The actual high point is nearby. We may descend the mountain in a different place to create a loop hike, but this will be decided at the time. You should be prepared for a very sunny, rocky climb up the old road/trail, and possibly windy conditions on the mountaintop. The total length of this hike is only about 5 miles, so it should only take 3-4 hours, including lunch at the summit.
