This hike is being held on Dec. 21st, the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, when the earth's northern hemisphere is tilted the furthest away from the winter sun. Winter solstice for 2003 will occur at 11:04 pm PST on December 21. For millenia, mankind has marked this first day of winter with celebrations of light, as a turning point in the seasons, hope for the "rebirth of the sun" and longer days ahead.
Due to the hectic holiday schedules everyone has, today's hike will be close in to San Diego, short and easy. Yet, it'll give us a chance to explore an area that most people drive past without much notice. Maps with driving instructions will be given out at our carpool meeting place at 9 am on Sunday morning, then we'll head out to the hiking site to enjoy the brief day together.
